FairTax Facts

The FairTax is proposed legislation in Congress that would replace the current federal income tax with a national retail sales tax. It would:

• likely make the American economy the most desirable place in the world to do business
• eliminate the Internal Revenue Service
• reduce complexity in the tax code
• not hit the poorest Americans the hardest
• it would dramatically expand the tax base, collecting revenue on consumption from illegal immigrants
   and foreign tourists
• stop Congress from rewarding friends, punishing enemies or manipulating behavior through the tax code
